Community celebrates second anniversary of newly-renovated centre

Residents celebrated the second birthday of their community centre – and its recent spectacular renovation – with a special community get together.

The event was an opportunity to recognise the remarkable impact the Valley Street Community Centre has had on the South West Burnley community, with hundreds attending each week and many more through the School Holiday Club.

The special birthday celebration also saw the opening of a brand new community kitchen, thanks to funding and support from the Lancashire Environment Fund (LEF).

With fantastic new facilities, the kitchen will provide a great space for people to develop their cooking skills, in addition to other activities, such as:

  • Fitness sessions, including boxing with 5 Ways Boxing Club
  • Wellbeing sessions
  • Arts and Crafts sessions, courtesy of the Valley Street Textiles Studio, whose artwork is currently on display in Gawthorpe Hall
  • A Summer Holiday club for children in the area.

Alicia Foley, Calico’s Community Involvement Advisor, said:

“The event was a great opportunity to celebrate the fantastic things that have happened at Valley Street Community Centre over the past two years. It’s made a real difference to the lives of the people in the area, so it was great to recognise this.

“The new kitchen is incredible. It will give so many people the chance to learn to cook and develop new life skills. With this funding we have also been able to update other areas of the building including new toilet and shower facilities for the centre users.

“We’d like to thank LEF for all their help and support.”
