Furniture Matters helps to keep landfill levels from spiralling during the Covid pandemic

Furniture Matters have been helping Blackpool & Wyre Council deal with an influx in bulky unwanted waste items as people use the extra time at home to renovate their properties.

We offer a bulky waste collection service all year round. However, demand for our ‘bulky collection’ has been so high recently, we have deployed an additional van and driver to help during this unprecedented time.

The items collected are either recycled or repaired by Furniture Matters staff and sold as warranty approved second hand. As a result, high quality domestic white goods and furniture can be bought at hugely reduced prices compared to brand new. Furthermore, tonnes of waste is diverted from landfill and recycled.

Steph Buchannan, Manager at Furniture Matters, said “we’ve never know it to be so busy! Blackpool & Wyre Council approached us and asked if we could increase our level of service to help with the huge numbers of collection requests; it’s proving convenient for people to book a collection with us and have everything taken away in one go. What we’re particularly proud of is how much extra recycling we’re able to do now. We are recycling 30% more waste than this time last year.”

Items that can be collected include washing machines, fridges, freezers, sofas, tables and chairs, although with social distancing measures these can only be taken away if the items are left outside the home. To arrange a bulky items collection across Blackpool and Wyre, go to furniturematters.co.uk or call 01524 426622.

The increased level of collection service is running for a further six to eight weeks but will remain available at a standard level of service beyond that.
