Community consultations are continuing around the redevelopment of derelict land at Burnley Hospital, with hopes the land can be transformed into accessible extra care apartments and a community hub.

Along with lead provider, The Calico Group, partners from East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust Burnley Borough Council, the University of Central Lancashire, Lancashire County Council, Participation Works and architects Brock Carmichael are working closely with people in the area to progress and develop the scheme.

The development would be the first of its kind in Burnley, intended to provide specialist assisted living accommodation in a neighbourhood setting, aimed at improving people’s quality of life and reducing social isolation. This will be designed primarily for people who require extra support while maintaining as much independence and dignity as possible.

The three community consultations have so far included looking at how to make the most of the development for the benefit of the residents, such as the layout of the apartments, and how the outdoors space should be used, with ideas including the addition of fruit trees, vegetable patches and herb gardens for residents to use.

The consultations are ongoing and help to provide valuable engagement and feedback from members of the public. The group is keen to hear from even more people in the area who can help to shape this project and provide insight.

If you are interested in taking part in future consultations, please follow The Calico Group Facebook and Twitter channels for dates and times of the upcoming events, or email Lynne Blackburn at lynneblackburn@me.com for more details and to secure your place.
