Motivation boosts among Calico apprentices with new training programme

Apprentices with Calico Enterprise’s pioneering shared apprenticeship scheme have successfully completed a pilot training programme designed to improve their employability skills and build their enthusiasm.

The training session aimed to develop the confidence and motivation of Constructing the Future’s workforce, ultimately improving long-term employment across the scheme.
The workshop covered a diverse range of topics, including:
  •  Assertiveness and boundaries
  • Self-defeating behaviours and resilience
  • Addiction awareness
  • Personal responsibility
  • Self esteem.

The training is delivered by Derek Fredericks from Acorn Recovery Projects, who are a leading provider of motivational programmes.

Feedback from apprentices following the first session has been largely positive and, following the success of the pilot, the training will become a mandatory programme for all apprentices going forward.

 Luke Kitching, apprentice plumber, said:
“I think the course has helped me become a more assertive person. It’s given me a better look on life.
“It’s helped me become better at timekeeping, which my site manager has noticed – I’m really proud of that.”

Joe Ellison, apprentice plumber, discusses what he has learnt from the course:

“It’s benefitted me quite a lot. I feel as though, if I take responsibility for my own actions, I’ll be trusted more and will get more jobs at work, and more opportunities to improve myself.”

Constructing the Future is an innovative shared apprenticeship scheme which aims to create high-quality employment opportunities for local people.
