Located in the heart of the Whitworth valley, Barley View Residential Home is appealing for volunteers from the local community to read to a blind resident who is feeling disconnected from the world.

Betty Kidger, 88, has been a resident at Barley View since they first opened their doors in December 2018 and lost her sight eight years ago, which left her feeling incredibly lonely.

During a recent chat with Betty, Jane Williamson, Head of Care, discovered that her most longed-for wish is a simple one; to have someone who can commit to reading to her weekly and help her practice writing her name.

This would be a great opportunity for those local to Whitworth to make a real difference to Betty’s life and who are looking for a fulfilling way to spend their own free time.

Ideally, volunteers will have a kind, caring and patient nature and be able to commit to spending an hour a week with Betty in an afternoon or evening that works around any existing responsibilities they may have.

Gemma Howarth, Senior Care Assistant at Barley View, said: “Betty loves to reminisce and has lots of wonderful stories to tell us; she always says she could write a book about them! She loves to talk, listening to music, and enjoys having a story read to her.

“Betty also goes to blind club every Tuesday and really enjoys this. She is a lovely lady with a big heart, and her smile brightens up everyone’s day. She truly is a beautiful person.”
