Calico accountant elected to national AAT advisory council

An accountant from The Calico Group has been elected to a national advisory group that helps shape the future direction of the accounting profession.

Gemma Astin has secured a place on the Association of Accounting Technicians’ (AAT) Members’ Advisory Council (MAC), following a vote by AAT members across the UK.

The council was launched in 2024 to make sure members have a stronger voice in how the organisation develops. It brings together accounting professionals from a range of backgrounds, industries and career stages to share views and provide feedback on issues affecting both AAT members and the wider profession.

Gemma put herself forward for election over the summer, with members voting in September for the candidates they felt would best represent them. She joins 37 other council members, each bringing different experiences and perspectives to discussions that will help guide AAT’s future work and priorities.

Having completed all three levels of her AAT qualifications before progressing from Assistant Accountant into her current role, Gemma believes her experience within housing and the charitable sector will bring something different to the table.

Speaking about her appointment, Gemma said: “I was very excited to be shortlisted, let alone elected.

“As the majority of the Members’ Advisory Council is made up of accountants running their own practices, I think my voice and the experience I have gained through Syncora and The Calico Group brings a unique perspective that deserves a place in discussions that will help shape the future of AAT.

“I am proud to have been trusted with this position by AAT members and I hope my views, experiences and opinions can make a real difference.”

In her role, Gemma supports strategic decision-making, prepares management accounts and contributes to government tenders. Her work across housing and social purpose organisations gives her first-hand insight into the challenges and opportunities facing finance professionals working outside of traditional accountancy practice.

Her election recognises her own professional achievements whilst ensuring the experiences of colleagues working across housing, support and charitable services are represented in conversations that will influence the future of the profession.
