In just under 40 years, local charity SafeNet has provided safe temporary refuge accommodation to over 10,000 women and children, helping them break free from domestic abuse and gain the confidence to rebuild healthy, safe lives.
In addition, SafeNet has supported many more victims/survivors through confidential support services in the heart of local communities, including Independent Domestic Abuse Advisors (IDVAs) and community outreach support.
SafeNet, a small charity established in 1976, currently provides support across the North West, with refuge and outreach services in Pennine Lancashire and Lancaster, Morecambe and District.
Helen Gauder, SafeNet Charity Manager, said:
“In just one year, there were nearly 29,000 calls to the Lancashire Constabulary and 5,000 children referred to Lancashire County Council’s Care Connect Team for domestic abuse incidents. The majority of women and children we see are assessed as high or very high risk of further abuse. Many arrive at refuge facilities in distress, traumatised, without hope or confidence.
SafeNet is a specialist domestic abuse provider, including bi-lingual support for women from minority ethnic backgrounds and specialist support for those with additional health needs. In coming months they also plan to expand their refuge services to include a ‘Recovery Refuge’, specialising in support for those with complex needs, creating a full range of support for women and families across the region.
SafeNet is also part of The Calico Group, a group of innovative North West charities and businesses which work together to make social profit, rather than financial profit, the driving force behind their wide range of services.
Working in partnership, the Group delivers an enhanced service for victims which can include treatment for drug and alcohol issues, independent living skills, rehousing and employment training.
