Recycle Week 2020; breathing new life into old white goods

Say ‘recycling’ to someone and they’ll probably just imagine rinsing out old tins and bottles and throwing them in a brightly coloured bin in the back yard.

Which it is, but it’s also so much more than that…

This week is Recycle Week 2020 and the theme, after the challenges we’ve collectively faced this year, is ‘Thanking the Nation: ‘Together – We Recycle’. As our lives and routines have been turned upside down, there’s been a band of people keeping Britain recycling.

It’s true that many of those people are the men and women who collect your bins and sort the contents. However there are others who play a huge part in recycling that you may never have considered and who help the environment and our local communities in the process. People like Kev.

Kev is the White Goods Assistant at Furniture Matters, taking used washing machines, tumble dryers and fridges and making them literally sparkle! Old white goods, which would otherwise have been destined for landfill or just dumped, get a new life thanks to our team. Once our collection drivers have brought them in, and once our expert engineers have repaired any issues, it’s over to Kev. He puts so much pride into his work that he makes second hand items literally look like they’ve never been used.

Those items are then sold online at low cost or in our stores in Blackpool and Morecambe –  meaning lower income households are able to fit their home with warranty approved goods without the need for finance agreements or buying expensive new products.

As part of Recycle Week 2020, we managed to get Kev to take off his marigolds for more than five minutes, have a brew and answer a few of our questions;

Why do you take so much pride in your job?

I take pride in my job because we all get along with each other at Furniture Matters. I love to see the finished product when I’ve finished cleaning it.

What would you say to someone who isn’t sure about buying a used and refurbed washing machine?

They are really good quality and like new when I’ve finished with them!! They also come with a 12 month guarantee.

What’s your trick to getting these machines looking so good?!

I like to not be beaten and like to see them gleaming when they’ve left my area! I use the right cleaning materials and a steam cleaner for the job and good old fashioned elbow grease!

If you are looking to buy white goods, furniture or household items then you can visit our Facebook page or see us in store in Blackpool (3 -5 Caunce Street) or Morecambe (56-58 Euston Road).  We do stock new items too, but I’m sure Kev would challenge you to spot the difference!
