The vitality of volunteers

There are over one hundred volunteers working across The Calico Group and these dedicated volunteers donate an astounding 4,500 hours per week to the services and help make a real difference to people’s lives.

Within Calico Enterprise, there are a large number of volunteers sharing their time, skills and expertise with Furniture Matters in Blackpool, Lancaster and Morecambe and at the Bean Good coffee shops in Burnley and Preston.
Martyn Browitt, Operations Manager at Furniture Matters, said; “Without our volunteers we could not function as a company and complete all the work we do.

“Many are volunteering as a way back into employment and we do all we can to assist this. However for our volunteers it’s all about the camaraderie of belonging to a team, getting out of the house and out and about each day, plus doing something they enjoy.

“All our volunteers have their own unique skills, and a wealth of experience and knowledge to help us deliver our work.”

The volunteers across The Calico Group, dedicate their time for a variety of reasons, some volunteer as a way to gain qualifications and access to further education courses.

Sharon volunteers at Acorn Recovery Projects and is one of the many volunteers who have been through the recovery programmes that Acorn offer. Sharon is part of the Acorn family, assisting with administration and taking care of the reception two days a week.
Sharon insists that becoming a volunteer massively boosted her confidence and skills, and with Acorn’s support she has gained her NVQ Level two in Administration.
