Volunteers from Calico and the community, in partnership with Burnley Borough Council, headed back to Towneley Park to add more trees to the park’s landscape.
Throughout the day, the team worked together to plant a whopping 2,800 trees along Deer Park Road, a busy route which connects Pike Hill to the park’s garden centre.
The newly planted trees will grow together to create hedges on either side of the road, replacing the current wooden bollards. By replacing the bollards with trees, it will increase biodiversity and provide a natural food source for insects and wild animals.
Mark Ashworth, Construction Planner for Ring Stones, leads Calico’s sustainability initiatives through the Going Green Team. Talking about the team’s second successful tree planting event, he said: “It was great to see so many people come together from across the Calico Group.
“Whilst working to our Calico Values, we managed to touch on three Global Goals: #13 Climate Action, #15 Life on Land and #17 Partnerships for the Goals”.
As Burnley was treated to one of its first sun-drenched days of the year, the team worked hard to plant eight different tree species in the Spring sunshine, including: Quickthorn, Blackthorn, Guelder Rose, Spindle, Crab Apple, Alder Buckthorn, Wayfaring Tree and Dog Rose.
Rachel Jackson, Group Volunteer Co-ordinator for Calico Enterprise, added: “The day was a chance to help improve one of our local parks, as well as catch up with colleagues from across the business.
“I really enjoyed having the chance to support our Going Green agenda, while really making a visible difference to our local community”.
This successful community event follows another tree planting which took place earlier in the month. At the beginning of February, Calico and Burnley Council worked together to plant 100 established oak trees to the park, close to Brunshaw.
