Calico urges customers to prepare for Universal Credit

Calico is urging its customers to prepare for Universal Credit, ensuring they don’t fall into debt whilst their claims are being processed, which can see them go up to seven weeks without any benefits.

Universal Credit is a means tested benefit for people of a working age

It will replace six existing benefits – including Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support, Working Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit and Housing Benefit – with a single monthly payment.

As a result, anyone who currently receives Housing Benefit will no longer have their rent paid directly to Calico – instead, the monthly Universal Credit payment will be made directly to customers, and they will have to make arrangements to pay their rent themselves.

Calico’s Money Wise and Income Management teams are available to provide any support customers need to them get ready for Universal Credit.

As part of its support, Calico is sending out a special publication to help its 4600 customers to help ensure they don’t fall into debt following the roll out of Universal Credit.

The special edition of Calico’s magazine, Bolt, provides essential information to fully prepare people for the introduction of Universal Credit.

Kelly Jackson, Calico’s Income & Financial Inclusion Manager, said:

“Universal Credit will have a significant impact on the finances of many of our customers. However, we are concerned that there are still a lot of people out there who are still unsure about the impact the Government’s changes will have, or may not have the household budgeting skills to deal with it.

“Claiming for Universal Credit can take up to seven weeks, and we want to help customers avoid any arrears or financial difficulties that may build up while this is going through.

“The Money Wise and Income Management  teams are available to answer any questions or concerns you may have about Universal Credit. Give us a call to see how we can help you.”
